Psychotherapy for Children
For concerns including behavioral problems, anger/opposition, depression, anxiety, learning issues, adoption, & Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD or ADD). With the parent as “the expert” on their child, Dr. Silverman develops a plan to address an issue in a way that is congruent with the values of the family and community. Parents are encouraged to be involved with the child’s therapy in most cases, because the parents will be implementing the corrective strategies at home. Children also tend to be more comfortable talking about difficult issues with a family member in the room. Dr. Silverman works from a mostly rewards-based orientation, yet she impresses the importance of routine, structure, and predictable consequences. She is also familiar with attachment parenting, positive parenting, and parenting in accordance with a child’s temperament.
Psychotherapy for Teens / Adolescents
Regarding issues such as anger/opposition, low academic performance, mood disorders (depression and bipolar disorder), anxiety (worries, panic, and OCD), impulsivity, self-injury, alcohol and drug abuse, and relationship problems with peers or family members. Parents are typically involved in at least some therapy sessions; however, exceptions are made in special circumstances. In general, parents are valuable in providing an important perspective on the teen’s functioning and providing insight into the larger family system.
Family Therapy
Common issues include different parenting styles, birth of a child, becoming a new mother, relocation of the family, deployment of a family member, divorce, remarriage, blended families, step-parenting, financial loss and its impacts, addition of a sibling or grandparent to the household, grief over death of a family member, reaction to natural disasters, and medical or psychiatric illness of a family member. In addition, the bulk of Dr. Silverman’s work with children and adolescents addresses the larger family system to some degree because, many times, a child or adolescent displays a “symptom” in response to a larger family problem or issue. Modern family life is anything but simple. Dr. Silverman can help you re-discover how happy and healthy your family can be.
Individual Psychotherapy for Adults
Presenting problems include adjusting to a new phase in life, career and financial stress, relationship issues, mood disorders (depression, bipolar disorder, and post-partum depression), anxiety disorders (panic, worry, and OCD), substance abuse issues, psychosis, grief, gender and sexuality issues, and coping with medical illness. Dr. Silverman offers an intelligent yet compassionate approach where the individual’s perspective and feelings about the problem are of paramount importance. The ultimate goal is to offer clients the tools they need to grow independently.
Couples / Marital Therapy
For issues including improving communication, intimacy issues, recovering from infidelity, and deciding whether to remain in or end a relationship. Therapy looks at the relationship as an adaptive or maladaptive system. The couple’s goals for therapy are considered of utmost importance.
